But always calculate the price&#8211;sometimes, the savings aren&#8217;t worth the hassle.</p>
<p>6.  Join your local co-op. A food co-op is a business owned by members which provides products such as groceries to its members at a discount. Joining one is usually pretty easy&#8211;just sign on and pay your dues, and if you volunteer for the co-op you can get even more discounts. Most of the food from co-ops is organic, from local family farms.</p>

<p>Dog health food may sound a like a strange idea, but today there are so many dogs suffering from allergies and reactions to their food that you owe it to your best friend to look into this. Many vets are recognising that dogs are starting to develop health problems that are solely due to additives in their food.</p>
<p>So when was the last time that you actually looked at the ingredient list on your dog&#8217;s food? Go ahead and have a look now. Do you know what meal is exactly? What about the preservatives? What are they doing to your dog?</p>
<p>Well, from a nutritional point of view you need a certain ration of protein, fat and carbohydrate to give your dog their full spectrum of nutrients. Often you&#8217;ll see ratios like 40% meat 50% vegetables and 10% grain. While not wrong, this can be a bit confusing. The actual ratios that you want to achieve are based on protein (25-30%), fat (30-35%) and carbohydrate (35-45%). Then you need to look at exactly what ingredients make up those ratios. I mean, lean meat isn&#8217;t going to add much to the proportion of fat, compared to a really fatty type of meat.</p>
<p>Often you&#8217;ll hear carbohydrates being dismissed as an unnecessary part of a dog&#8217;s <a href="http://f57fbpf83zktay7kv4ogyk6zf9.hop.clickbank.net/?tid=DSP">diet</a>, however this is only true when an excessive amount of the food is made of low quality grain fillers.</p>
<p>Sometimes, pet food companies use cheap grains as a filler for the food so the ratio might be more like 70-80% carbohydrates, so this isn&#8217;t going to be the best for your dog in the long run. And can lead to allergies and dermatitis just like in humans. After all it&#8217;s a bit hard to imagine a German shepherd grazing on the African Savannah isn&#8217;t it? They aren&#8217;t herbivores so we shouldn&#8217;t feed them like they are.</p>
<p>And what about preservatives? A common and hotly disputed one is ethoxyquin. This is used to preserve that fat component from breaking down, but it has been linked to problems ranging from dermatitis to cancerous tumors and dramatically shortened life spans. Unfortunately pet food labeling requirements aren&#8217;t as strict as human ones, so some companies are adding this horrible preservative but aren&#8217;t actually listing it on the label. Which makes it pretty difficult to track down, if you want to keep using commercial dog food but keep your dog healthy. This is one of the most dangerous additives but not the only one that is routinely added to dog food and hidden.</p>
<p>But what about the actual protein and fat content? What exactly are the proteins used? Some research has found a range of horrible animal parts that have been put into dog food. Offal and by products of other animals and even euthanized pets, their plastic tags and lethal chemicals intact! So just because there&#8217;s 30% protein, that doesn&#8217;t mean that it&#8217;s something you&#8217;d be wanting your dog to eat!</p>
<p>It&#8217;s easy to see why more people are beginning to make their own dog food. In many cases it&#8217;ll be cheaper and far better quality. You can give your dog a variety of meats, you can control the quality and you can eliminate all those nasty chemicals. And it doesn&#8217;t take long either. Many people cook up a batch once a week and freeze it. Or you can opt for a baked biscuit type of food with all your dog&#8217;s favorite goodies in there.</p>

<p>It seems like these days, healthy eating has become such a multi-billion-dollar industry that everyone knows what it&#8217;s like to get bombarded by &#8216;The New Health Food!&#8217; ads for Acai whatnot and Goji Berry thingamajig. It&#8217;s an unfortunate aspect of our pharmaceutical culture that we&#8217;ve learned to look for cures for specific ills, and we treat food the same way. Cranberries for UTIs, carrots for vision problems, prunes for constipation&#8230;we&#8217;re treating food like it&#8217;s medicine, and it&#8217;s failing us. We need a new health food regimen.</p>
<p>It&#8217;s true that Hippocrates said &#8220;Make food your medicine and medicine your food&#8221;, but that&#8217;s not what he meant. By eating right in general &#8212; every day &#8212; we prevent far more illnesses than we could ever hope to treat. The point is not to respond to conditions by seeking a superfood, it&#8217;s to prevent conditions by getting proper nutrition.</p>
<p>Nutrition doesn&#8217;t stop at food, however. The body also takes in water, air, sunlight, and surface contaminants. If your water or air aren&#8217;t clean, or you don&#8217;t get enough sun, or you&#8217;re spreading chemicals on your skin that disrupt your body&#8217;s functions, all of the right eating in the world won&#8217;t give you perfect health. But it will help &#8212; more than you probably realize &#8212; to make your ALL of your food your &#8216;New Health Food&#8217;.</p>
<p>It starts with a proper quantity of protein and fats. There are proteins (amino acids) and fats (fatty acids) that your body cannot make on its own, but it needs to survive. They are called Essential Fatty and/or Amino Acids (EFAs and EAAs). Omega-3 and Omega-6s are the most well-known EFAs, and EAAs are so commonly overlooked that deficiencies in them are responsible for almost 80% of emotional disorders in the USA. (EAAs are the basis of mood-stablizing hormones, so if you don&#8217;t get them, you don&#8217;t get the hormones, which destabilizes your mood and causes depression, irritability, and ADHD.)</p>
<p>It&#8217;s critical to get at least 80 grams of protein in a day, including at least 80 grams per weeks from eggs and 80 grams per week from red meat. That will ensure that your body has enough protein to build tissues and repair organs with, and your brain will be able to create all of the hormones it needs to provide mental and emotional stability.</p>

<p>Similarly, fats are critical to your body&#8217;s ability to fight infections, injuries, and illnesses. Your body&#8217;s fundamental response to these things is inflammation: the ability for your body to focus heat, blood, and antibodies at the site of injury or illness and attack the problem head-on. Your EFAs are vital to your body&#8217;s ability to target inflammation in an effective manner. If your Omega33/Omega-6 balance is off, your body may not be able to become inflamed, and thus be unable to fight off injury or illness &#8212; or worse yet, it may become hyper-inflamed or uncontrollably inflamed, which causes problems like chronic pain, oversensitivity (of the physical kind), and even advanced problems like fibromyalgia and some kinds of cancer.</p>
<p>The key with fats is to get both Omega-3s (fish oils, olive oils, nut and seed oils) as well as Omega-6s (vegetable oils), in roughly a 1-to-1 ratio. This is very challenging for most of us, since we all eat vegetable, corn, or canola oils in almost everything, but peanut oil is expensive and fish oils are rare. Establishing the ratio, however, dramatically improves your body&#8217;s ability to maintain it&#8217;s own health.</p>

<p>Health food doesn&#8217;t need a definition, does it? We all know what health food is it&#8217;s yogurt and granola, whole-grain cereal and organically grown vegetables and fruit. When you put all that together, you should have healthy food, yet all too often, what&#8217;s marketed as health food these days barely classifies as food, let alone health food.</p>
<p>Take a look at one of our favorite health food choices &#8211; yogurt. It hit supermarket shelves in the early seventies, though it had been available before that in health food stores and restaurants. Real yogurt has two ingredients: milk (whole, skim or low fat) and live yogurt cultures. That&#8217;s  health food &#8211; calcium, vitamin D, vitamin A, protein. Next time you&#8217;re at the supermarket, take a look at the dairy case. You&#8217;ll find row after row of hyper-sweetened brightly colored rainbow swirled and candy-sprinkled yogurt packaged in ways that appeal to our littlest consumers &#8211; children. Millions of parents buy the enticing packages, secure that because it&#8217;s yogurt, they&#8217;re buying food that&#8217;s healthy for their children.</p>
<p>One look at the label, though, and it&#8217;s clear that these kiddy yogurts (as well as most of the yogurt that&#8217;s marketed to adults) are a far cry from heath food. Some of the most popular yogurts for children contain anywhere from 3 to 10 added teaspoons of sugar. Considering how many teaspoons of yogurt are in a single serving, you might as well hand your child the sugar bowl. In addition, most yogurts include &#8220;natural&#8221; ingredients that have little to do with health food. Ingredients like pectin (to thicken yogurt), carrageenan (a seafood extract that gives some yogurts their body, and annatto (for color) add little nutritionally to yogurt. They&#8217;re in the mix to serve one main purpose: to help yogurt survive its trip from the factory to your table.</p>
<p>You&#8217;ll find the same situation with other foods that originally made their debut as health foods in the seventies. Granola has become granola bars with chocolate chips and gooey caramel. Whole wheat flour is bleached and denuded of its flavorful kernels. Sunflower seeds are roasted in oil and salted. Even brown rice comes in the instant variety.</p>
<p>Healthy food not health food</p>
